Legal Information

Many legal questions might arise for someone who is being harmed by their partner.  If you or someone you know has legal questions, we encourage you to contact your local domestic abuse program.  Many of these programs either have staff attorneys or can help you find someone to consult with or retain at reduced (or no) cost.  Domestic abuse programs also often have staff or trained volunteers who can in some situations go to civil/probate or criminal court with you and/or help you navigate the legal system if need be.

Additionally, domestic abuse program staff and volunteers can help you think about whether you want to seek a protective order and can help you think through and plan for your safety if you choose to seek help and/or relief from the courts.  Note that most programs will not directly advise you about whether or not to seek an order of protection, but can offer information and support to help you decide what is best for you and – when applicable – your children.
